AIR FREIGHT

With our "SAB" product, demand for South Africa in the SENATOR Africa Bridge has increased. Additional flights are currently being handled from Frankfurt Hahn (HHN) to Johannesburg (JNB). Capacities to the USA also remain at a high level. The SENATOR Atlantic Bridge will offer correspondingly more flights in the upcoming weeks.

In general, many airlines worldwide are increasing their capacities more and more. The more relaxed economic situation in Europe and especially in China is felt here. It remains to be seen whether the current development of the corona crisis, with a renewed increase in the number of cases, could weaken this trend again.

OCEAN FREIGHT

The Australian Government Department of Agriculture and Water Resources has announced a temporary fumigation requirement for endangered goods. The fumigation obligation applies to shipments from September 1st, 2020 to May 31st, 2021. This precautionary measure is intended to prevent the spread of the Marbled Tree Bug (BMSB).

After the devastating explosion on August 4th, 2020, the container terminal in Beirut was reopened. In the incident, the western port areas in particular were severely damaged and the container terminal remained largely intact. Since August 13th, 2020, the services of Hapag Lloyd and CMA CGM to the Lebanese capital have been active again.

For the Port of Montreal (CA), the Longshore Union and the Checkers Union have agreed to end the strike and to continue negotiations during work. The Terminals in Montreal are open again since Monday, August 24th, 2020. According to the authorities, it will take several weeks to clear the backlog caused by the strike.

RAIL FREIGHT

In July 2020, the number of rail freight connections from China to Europe increased significantly. With 1,232 trains, the number rose by 68% year-on-year to a new record (source: China State Railway Group).

As the Chinese economy is recovering noticeably from the consequences of the Corona crisis, demand for rail freight transport continues to develop dynamically upwards.

CURRENT SITUATION WORLDWIDE

CHINA

Air China Cargo and Cainiao, the logistics division of Alibaba Group, have established a new ecommerce cargo service to enable faster delivery times between China and Europe. Three flights per week are planned from Hangzhou to Liège with Madrid as the final destination. The capacity of the Boeing B777F will be used.

The Chinese government in Beijing will, according to observers, make every effort to use the forthcoming trade talks with the USA to ease the bilateral relations. Relations between the two largest economies in the world have recently reached a low point. The reasons for this included the Corona crisis, the new legal system in Hong Kong and new tensions in Taiwan.

GERMANY

Lufthansa Cargo is preparing for the possible appearance and subsequent distribution of a vaccine in the wake of the Corona crisis. In this context, two new pharmaceutical hubs are being opened, in Munich and Chicago. The 1,000 square meter pharmaceutical hub at Munich Airport can accommodate 96 pallets and loose cargo. Storage is possible in three different temperature ranges (source: theloadstar.com).

USA

In airfreight, rates to and from the USA have increased since the beginning of July 2020. The reason for this is the slow recovery of the global economy from the corona crisis, especially in China. The demand for exports to the USA is very high. In general, freight rates for connections from Asia to North America and Europe are rising. Rates from China to the USA have recently fallen slightly, but are still around 85 % higher than in the same period in 2019.

Two hurricanes are expected to hit the Gulf Coast in the USA this week. Experts expect the two hurricanes to have category 1 and category 2 strength, and the US Coast Guard has temporarily closed the ports of South Louisiana. It can be assumed that the closure of other ports could follow, especially in Texas, Alabama and Florida.
