In the following you get a new overview of the current market situation.

AIR FREIGHT

On the SENATOR Atlantic Bridge the Capacity utilization remains very high. The frequency to Greenville-Spartanburg (GSP) will therefore be maintained with five flights per week to meet the high demand. In addition, the SENATOR Atlantic Bridge has been operating two weekly flights to Chicago Rockford (RFD) since October. After a successful start in July, a "Midweek" rotation has now been added to the schedule.

On the SENATOR Africa Bridge the demand also remains very high. Two additional flights in October will respond to this. The commercial options to Johannesburg (JNB) are currently very limited. On the SENATOR Asia Bridge, the stopover in Dubai (DWC) will be cancelled, so that the route now runs from Frankfurt (FRA) to Singapore (SIN) and from there directly to Frankfurt-Hahn (HHN). However, customers can still book a stopover in DWC on request.

Due to the Golden Week and the general Peak Season in China a high demand is currently observed. For the upcoming weeks, Bottlenecks are expected for all transports out of China.

OCEAN FREIGHT

Following strikes in Sydney's important Port Botany, several shipping companies have reacted to the impact on shipping traffic from Europe and South East Asia to Australia. Among others, the shipowners Cosco, MSC and OOCL have announced ship cancellations and delays. According to some shipping companies, the situation has since eased somewhat, but the consequences of the short-term booking stop must still be expected. The congestion in the port of Sydney will probably also lead to longer delays in the ports of Brisbane and Melbourne. According to OOCL, normal processing is not expected to resume until November. This should be kept in mind for all bookings to Australia.

Following a Cyber Attack last weekend, the shipping company CMA CGM is continuing its efforts to restore all bookings. The provider's IT engineers are currently busy with the maintenance work. In the meantime, numerous customers have criticized CMA CGM's backup booking procedure for being insufficient. According to experts, it could still take several days to clean up the effects of the incident.

RAIL FREIGHT

On September 25th, 2020, a direct train from China arrived in Rotterdam for the first time since 2015. The train had started in Xi'an. It is currently planned that the service will become a regular service.

Overall, recent evaluations for the first half of 2020 have shown that rail freight traffic between China and Europe has continued to grow in importance. In contrast to airlines and shipping companies, rail freight was even able to expand its position despite the Corona Crisis. From January to the end of June 2020, over 5,000 trips with 1.69 billion tons of goods were counted (source: railfreight.com).

CURRENT SITUATION WORLDWIDE

CHINA

Consumer spending during the Golden Week in China is significantly lower than in the previous year. Overall, consumption has recovered after the worst slumps caused by the Corona Crisis, yet the figures are still far from normal in the world's second largest economy.

China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced on Sunday that the income from tourism for this year's Golden Week has so far amounted to 312 billion yuan. This is a 31% decrease from the first four days of the holiday last year. The given reason is that fewer Chinese travel and the average spending per tourist has fallen by 12% (source: nytimes.com).

GERMANY

Frankfurt Airport is expanding its capacity for temperature-sensitive transports. Effective immediately, the airport operator Fraport is using two additional state-of-the-art refrigerated trailers for the transport of pharmaceutical goods. Fraport is thus expanding its fleet to a total of 20 vans. This enables the fast loading of temperature-sensitive products. With regard to a possible distribution of vaccines in the course of the Corona Crisis, Frankfurt Airport is thus well prepared (source: aircargonews.net).

INDIA

Due to the "Air Bubble" dispute, India has suspended air traffic for Lufthansa until October 20th, 2020. India's aviation authority has "unexpectedly" rejected the flight plan announced for October, Lufthansa informed its passengers.

The reason given by India was "massive competitive disadvantages" due to strict entry regulations for Indian citizens in Germany. In addition, Lufthansa had benefited more than Indian airlines from the corridor solution, which has allowed reciprocal air traffic between Germany and India again since June 2020 (source: aero.de).

USA

In Ocean Freight it should be noted that the ports of LA/Long Beach, Miami and Boston are currently congested. Following the slump during the Corona Crisis, capacity utilization is above normal levels again for the first time. In the supply chains to and from the USA, temporarily higher waiting times need to be expected.
