Due to new COVID cases in several major Chinese cities, mainly in Shanghai, cargo air traffic between Europe and China is currently being significantly disrupted. Some flights have been cancelled or delayed. Currently, many airlines are adjusting their flight schedules: further flight cancellations, rerouting to other destinations or not accepting time-critical or overlength shipments are the result.
Currently, the following factors should be considered:
- At Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG): both PACTL and EAL are very slow in processing. Cargo may not be delivered until instructed by the terminal, flight schedules are still uncertain and may be cancelled at short notice. Truck deliveries to and from PVG require drivers to have a test certificate. Due to acute staff shortages, there will be disruptions here as well.
- In Beijing, the government has recommended leaving the metropolitan region only in case of emergency. Special shift operations have been introduced for Beijing PEK Airport to comply with quarantine precautions. As a result, ground handling is running noticeably delayed (as of today: at least 2-3 days). For truck deliveries to and from PEK more time is needed for controls (COVID-19 tests etc.). Due to staff shortages, delays are also expected here for the time being.
- Tianjin TSN and Zhengzhou CGO airports are also affected by new COVID cases and corresponding measures. Here, too, ground handling will slow down noticeably for the time being.
The situation in China is exacerbating the already existing capacity bottlenecks in Europe. Due to the flight cancellations at short notice, but also because freighters are operating partly empty or with reduced payloads to Shanghai, there are also considerable capacity bottlenecks in the East Bound sector. SENATOR INTERNATIONAL is working intensively on possible charter solutions to overcome the bottlenecks.
If you have any questions regarding your shipment or the situation, please do not hesitate to contact your local representative directly.
